I explained to my seventh-graders that a metaphor compares to unlike objects that have similar characteristics. Thinking about the fact that I'm always punctual, I wrote on the overhead, "I am a clock." I asked my class why I would draw this comparison. One of my students piped up, "Because you get ticked off!"
