Ignorance can be bliss....

I am deep in to producing a play for the second time and it is a world of differences from my first time.

The first time I wrote the script, produced it, and had a minor acting role. For that one I left most of the design up to my director / stage manager. The show was produced at the Winnipeg and Edmonton Fringe Theatre Festivals (in 2007). The set was fairly simple.... yet complicated too.
Some of the things I learned from that adventure were:
  • The less set / scene changes the better
  • Keep the cast to a minimum (I had 5 actors), especially when doing a traveling show (unless there is ample $$$)
  • How to deal with difficult actors (we were to perform in Saskatoon too, but didn't.... that is another story)
  • Promotional design and how to get the word out (media, word of mouth, complementary tickets, etc).

Fast forward about 2 year (to the latter part of 2009), where I took an intro course in Stagecraft and Design, where I got a B+.

Fast forward another 2 years (to the latter part of 2011). I started volunteering at the Walterdale Playhouse theatre, where I am beginning to get actual hands on experience with the stagecraft and design aspects of theatre.

This second play I am producing I also wrote, and have taken some of what I learned to make it a one-act set in one location, with a cast of 3. I only applied to the Edmonton Fringe Theatre Festival, and Stage Struck 2012 in Edmonton (so no traveling).

Moving on to today (January)....
From getting all the actors, to the day the play is on stage, is less than 6 weeks. And this time I am also directing and designing it....

Now to relate it back to the title....

Back in 2007 I was ignorant. I had seen many plays at the Fringe festivals, as well as other theatres. I knew the Fringes worked on much smaller budgets (next to nothing for some). So I figured I could try it. I thought I did well, considering I had a lousy script..... at least I enjoyed the experience.

In 2012 it is a different story. Sure I am enjoying it, but I have learned that there is so much more to producing a show. I have the script, I have the actors, I have a stage manager (who has been great at getting make-up and helping to get a set designer). My set designer however had to pull out for personal reason, he did a preliminary drawing (see pic at the top), but I still have to build it. And paint it, and light it, and do sound...... plus direct.
My biggest mistake (aka what I have learned so far this round), is not getting the script, actors, and others involved earlier, so there would be more time to get everything in place.

Needless to say, once Stage Struck 2012 is over - the last weekend of February - I will be turning my attention to the Edmonton Fringe, which is in mid August.... that way I hope to have just about everything raring to go come that festival.

BNBC

On Saturday 14 January I hosted the Buck Naked Boy's Club of Edmonton's January winter potluck.

My 3 tenants vacated the house for the night. Two went out of town, the third happened to arrive home after everyone else left. (Of the 3, he seems to be the least uncomfortable with my nudism, since I was still naked when he got back and acted as if I was dressed).

Their was a decent crowd (about 14), considering we were getting a small snow storm - the start of winter coming about 2 months later than usual (now who can deny climate change? .... that's a topic for another day).

For those who have not participated, the events usually go like this:
Guest start arriving around 6pm. They drop off their potluck dish and go strip in the room provided for that.
They are required to bring a towel to sit on. After stripping, they go and socialize with whomever else is around.
Topics of conversation covered yesterday, as I recall, included: politics of teaching, teaching in general, robots, politics of working for the city, current events, weather, my play and drama / theatre in general, the type and amount of food (i.e. praises, amount of deserts), naked yoga (which starts this coming Wednesday), nude swimming with Edmonton's Pagan Society (next weekend), and others I do not recall or were not prithee to.
Appetizers usually come out between 6 and 6:30, with the rest of the food between 6:30 and 7pm. Followed by desert usually by 8pm.
The BNBC of Edmonton also have a massage table, which was not used much yesterday.
People usually start to leave sometime between 9 and 10pm, with pretty much everyone gone by midnight.

It is a nudist group, for men only. So although sexual topics may be talked about, sex does not happen (caveat: at the summer lodge weekends, sex may happen as long as it is out of sight from public).

Joys of owning a house & having housemates

Yesterday as I was preparing to host the Buck Naked Boys Club (BNBC) of Edmonton monthly winter potluck, I was doing house cleaning.

Now I should mention I own my own house and rent out 3 rooms. It is a spacious house (113 square meter bungalow with finished basement nearly equivalent in size of main floor), with 2 bedrooms on each floor (main and basement).
As part of the rental agreement, everyone is responsible for keeping the shared parts of the house (living & dining room, kitchen, basement) clean. A rotating schedule was agreed upon, where everyone has an area they are responsible for keeping clean for 3 months.

So, as I was cleaning I noticed:
In the kitchen there was mold in the coffee pot (I don't drink coffee), and the dish cloth was not cleaned for at least 2 weeks (should be every week).
In the rest of the main floor the bathroom was not fully cleaned - dust on shelves, tub not clean.
The basement had the biggest issue. Not only was the toilet not clean, but the piping under sink was corroded and cracked. I generally don't use that bathroom, but I was surprised to find all the toilet paper soaking wet (kept under the sink) and none on the roll by the toilet. I will be asking why no one mentioned to me that there was a puddle / wet around the sink.
The final set of chores (mine for since November), is to put the garbage out, get mail & newspaper, and shovel the walk (yesterday was our first snow fall that will likely stay the rest of the winter).

Now I have had some issues before in encouraging my tenants to do their chores, in fact the last time I confronted them, about 6 months ago, they decided to change the rotation from every month to every three months.

If anyone reading this has suggestions, please let me know. I will be discussing this issue with the rest of the household once everyone is back from being out of town.

My current thought on strategy is to reinforce the reason for doing the chores and the agreed upon rotation schedule, as well as what I found lacking (and perhaps ask if they'd want their mother to have seen such a mess). Then to go through the house with everyone and point out / show them what is expected (i.e. that the tub needs to be cleaned and how to do it).
For at least one of them I think showing / pointing out where things weren't clean may be all he needs, as he already mentioned to me several months ago that through having to do the chores he learned how to clean. So the others might just have not known the areas they're responsible for.
